Unlicensed Activity

I thought I would just take a moment to talk about unlicensed activity. This conversation comes up from time to time, but in more than 16 years in this business I do not recall experiencing it for myself. Yesterday, I received a call from a woman who said she had a potential buyer for one of my listings. She went on to say she does not have a real estate license, which was a little weird but I have had other folks tell me they are not an agent. Without hesitation, she asked if I would pay her a referral fee. Also without hesitation, I said "no, it's illegal." "So you won't pay me referral fee" she said. Again, I reiterated "no, it's against the law." She said "then I won't give you the referral," and she hung up on me.

Folks, you don't have to go out showing houses, advertising homes for sale or negotiating contracts to be committing a crime. Even paying a "referral fee" to an unlicensed person is against the law here in Florida. If you are a licensee, don't do it. Your career is worth more than a quick sale.
